Start with the end in mind

If you want to be free from the day to day grind of your business, get to ZAR 10 million per year net profit, and provide 50 people with good jobs, the starting point is the end.

Dear Reader

Start with the end in mind

Get a clear picture of your future business

You have to start with the end in mind.

To do that, you need to find a place where you can be quiet for a while, with a pen and paper, or a whiteboard, or your computer – whatever ignites your creative juices.

Now imagine what your business must look like to:

  • Generate R 10 million a year net profit.
  • Employ 50 people.
  • Be able to run for at least 90 days without you having to speak to anyone in the business once.

What products / offerings do you need to be selling and delivering?

How much of those do you need to sell and deliver per month? (Hint: It is very often a good idea to focus most of your growth on your highest Gross Profit offerings.)

What does the value stream for each of those look like, all the way from lead generation to collecting payment?
What do the processes look like that support that?

What does the organisational structure look like that supports those processes?

Test it

If your business looked like this, would that meet the three goals?

  • Free the Founder
  • Get to R 10 Million per year net profit
  • Provide 50 good jobs

All of this fits on two or three pages.

You can do this in an hour or so.

Now use this to focus your planning

Now you have something concrete and tangible to work towards.

From now on, spend 30 minutes every day looking at this, and building plans for getting there. Every day make your plans a bit clearer, a bit more concrete, continually looking for the things you can do immediately, that are 100% within your control.

A few things happen when you do this.

Having this very clear, concrete, visible picture of what your business will look like when you get there, makes it a whole lot more believable.

Review this daily to maintain direction

The first time you build this, you might feel like this is a dream that is impossible to attain. But the more you look at it, the more your sub-conscious mind will begin to accept this as a reality that has just not manifested yet. Your sub-conscious mind will then literally begin to work, without your even being aware of it, on plans to make that vision become reality.

By working on continually refining your plans, you will find yourself naturally beginning to align your actions to these plans, and find yourself beginning to spot time, energy, and resources that are being wasted on activities that do not support these plans – allowing you to redirect those, and accelerate those plans.

If you need help with this, simply hit “reply” and let's have a conversation.

When you break it down to core components, growing a business from five to fifty in a year starts looking surprisingly possible. Dear Reader Five to Fifty in One Year The power of theoretical potential I was recently listening to one of the Founders podcasts by David Senra. It's one of my favourite podcasts, and in this episode, he was talking about how Elon Musk thinks. One of the things he does is to create what he calls an “Idiot Index” for every product they build. The idiot index is the...

If something is important to you, create a routine of regularly observing, and responding to it. Results will follow. Observe. Respond. Consistently. Results will Follow The exceptionally tidy and clean factory I have walked through many factories in my life. I love factories. When a factory is neat and tidy, it often is reflected in the performance of the business. There are fewer safety incidents, less time spent looking for things, and a general atmosphere that increases people's...

Prepare for hard. The harder it will be, the harder you must prepare. Prepare for Hard Sometimes it’s hard I swim in cold water. In winter, our pool gets cold. It gets almost no sun in the day, and the winter wind and rains just keeps draining every bit of heat energy from it, day after day – the kind of cold that when you stick your hand in it, it is physically painful. Every two or three days, I swim in this pool first thing in the morning. Before sunrise. Getting into that water is...
