The strange contradiction of regret

We regret the things we don't do more than the things we do. But we regret the times we say “Yes” more often than the times we say, “No.”

The strange contradiction of regret

I constantly remind myself: I’ve much more often said yes and wish I’d said no; I’ve almost never wished that my no had been yes.

(Looper, Terry; Bearss, Kris. Sacred Pace: Four Steps to Hearing God and Aligning Yourself with His Will)

I can identify with what Terry Looper says here. How many times have I been working on something or doing something and thinking I really should not have said “Yes” to this request for my time and energy!

“We regret the things we don't do more than the things we do.”

(I don't know who first said this)

I've found this to be true in my life as well. But this seems like the opposite of what I've just said.

So, we often regret things we chose not to do, but we also often regret the times we say “Yes.”

This is an interesting contrast, and it has to do with the origin of the opportunity:

When we say “Yes” or “No,” we are mostly responding to our role in other people's agenda.

However:

When we don't do something we are thinking of doing, we are mostly responding to our own agenda.

When you break it down to core components, growing a business from five to fifty in a year starts looking surprisingly possible. Five to Fifty in One Year The power of theoretical potential I was recently listening to one of the Founders podcasts by David Senra. It's one of my favourite podcasts, and in this episode, he was talking about how Elon Musk thinks. One of the things he does is to create what he calls an “Idiot Index” for every product they build. The idiot index is the difference...
